Volunteering at Forest Park Forever
January, 2026
by Debra Maurer, Class of 2012
On a hot day in July 2025 we (Forest Park forever team six, an intern and one other volunteer) removed cattails, torpedo grass, Biden‘s and swamp loose strife which were much overgrown at Murphy Lake. The work was cumbersome and the labor intensive. It was a detail that was very different from the typical weeding that we do quite often. A nice break from other chores. On this team, I have been able to do so many other things and have learned quite a bit.
Other details at this lake included removing debris left by the tornado which blew through Forest Park even affecting the northeast area of the park.
If you’re looking for a place to volunteer, this is a perfect place and it creates many challenges and room for learning.
